Q: How long does the camp run for? A: Version A of camp is every day from 2:00 to 3:30 PM and runs for a week. Version B is every day from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and also runs for a week.
Q: Who can do Version A? Who can do Version B? A: Version A is for all new students to our camp. Version B is meant for students who have already participated in Version A of camp.
Q: What if I can't pay for camp? A: We do have limited scholarship opportunities for students who don't have the money to pay for camp. If this applies to you, please send us an email or contact us via our Contact Form and we will figure out how you can participate.
Q: When do sign ups start? A: The sign up form for each week of camp will open approximately 7-9 days before the first day of camp, and close once spots have filled.
Q: Is there a discount for signing up siblings? A: We do not offer any discounts for siblings.
Q: How do we get supplies for the experiments? A: We take care of ordering and assembling supplies! All you have to do is come to La Canada High School on the Saturday before camp starts to pick up your box (we'll all be wearing PPE!). If you cannot make it to pick up your supplies, please let us know and we'll make sure they get to you.
Q: What will my child do at camp? A: To see the schedule for the week, visit the "Schedule" tab on our website. To see the structure of each day, scroll down the the "Day at Camp" section on our Home page.
Q: What is unique about Experiment in Your Element? A: We think it is very important, now more than ever, for kids to experience science in a collaborative and interactive setting. Our camp stresses group activities which encourage students to brainstorm together, design their own investigations, discuss what they learn, and present their results. It's a great way for them to meet new people in their age group and develop valuable skills at the same time.
Q: How much does camp cost and how do we pay? A: Camp fees are $105 for Version A and $120 for Version B (this includes the cost of materials) and can be payed by cash or check made out to Ashlyn Oh.
For Current Campers
Q: How do we get supplies for experiments? A: A box of materials will be provided, and will be available for pickup at La Canada High School the Saturday before camp starts. If you cannot make it to pickup, please email us and we'll figure something out. There will be some materials you need to provide, but they should all be items you can find around your house. For more detail, check out the materials sheet here: materials_info_sheet.pdf
Q: What sort of work area will my child need for camp? A: The most important thing is that your child has a reliable Wi-Fi connection for camp. Most of the experiments are fairly contained and can be performed inside on a table which can be easily cleaned or is covered with a tablecloth. There may be one or two days when we will do a slightly messier experiment, so on that day your child will need an outdoors space.
Q: What happens if my child's internet connection cuts out or they have technical difficulties? A: If you experience any technical difficulties, feel free to send us an email letting us know and we will try to help in whatever way possible. If your child misses an experiment/lecture and still wants to do it, they are welcome to stay on the Zoom call after camp ends and we will walk them through whatever they missed.
